The Toxic Husband's Perspective
James, Oliver And The Bullies
Present day
James Turner trudged through the hallways of Aurora heights High School, his mind a fog of anxiety and exhaustion. The tumultuous atmosphere at home was beginning to take its toll. His parents' constant arguments and his father's violent outbursts left a lingering dread in his heart, which he carried to school every day. He is an introvert, and he is misunderstood and labeled as proud by his peers because he didn't mingle.
James is sixteen years old, tall and lean, with dark hair that fell over his forehead. His blue eyes, a stark contrast to his dark hair, mirrored the intensity of his father's gaze. People often remarked on how much he resembled his dad, David Turner—a successful but ruthless businessman. However, unlike his father's intimidating presence, James had a gentleness about him, a softness that his father had long since buried under layers of ambition and arrogance.
In the classroom, James sat in the far corner, hunched over his desk, trying to blend into the background. His only solace at school came from his friendship with Oliver, a kind and intelligent boy who helped him with assignments and projects. In return, James would give Oliver cash gifts, forming the basis of their friendship. Oliver never questioned the extra money, assuming it was a byproduct of James's wealthy family.
Oliver was the only one who knew the real James, beyond the wealthy, introverted facade. But even Oliver didn't know about the chaos at home. James was good at keeping secrets. The violence and turmoil at home were locked away behind his sad eyes and forced smiles.
During lunch, James and Oliver sat at their usual spot, a quiet corner in the cafeteria. As they ate, they discussed their latest project for history class.
"James, you really need to add more detail to this section about World War II," Oliver said, pointing at James's notes. "The part about the Allied invasion is crucial. You need to mention Operation Overlord and its impact on the war."
James nodded, barely listening. His mind was elsewhere, lost in the labyrinth of worries about his family. His mother's bruised face, his father's drunken rants, and his sister's silent tears haunted him.
"Hey, are you listening?" Oliver tapped the table to get James's attention.
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Sorry, Ollie. I was just... thinking about something," James replied, trying to refocus on the conversation.
Oliver gave him a concerned look. "Is everything alright? You've been spacing out a lot lately."
James forced a smile. "Yeah, just a lot on my mind, I guess. I'll add more detail to the section about the invasion. What else do you think I should include?"
Oliver leaned forward, his voice becoming more enthusiastic. "You should definitely mention the strategic importance of the Normandy landings and how they marked the turning point in the war. Maybe add some personal anecdotes or quotes from soldiers who were there. It would make the report more engaging."
James nodded again, his eyes glazing over. He appreciated Oliver's help, but his mind kept drifting back to the chaos at home. The loud arguments, the crashing sounds of broken objects, and the fear that always seemed to lurk in every corner of his house.
Suddenly, a loud bang echoed through the cafeteria. The notorious group of bullies, led by Brad, entered the room. Brad was the epitome of a bad boy, flanked by his loyal cronies, Mike, Jake, and Steve. They were the back benchers, the boys who thrived on making others miserable.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't the rich snob and his charity case," Brad sneered as he approached James and Oliver's table.
James tensed, gripping his fork tightly. Oliver, ever the peacemaker, tried to defuse the situation. "We're just eating, Brad. No need for trouble."
Brad smirked, leaning in closer. "Trouble? Oh, I'm not here for trouble. Just wanted to remind James here that no matter how much money his daddy has, he's still a loser."
The cafeteria fell silent as Brad's words hung in the air. James felt a hot flush of shame and anger but didn't respond. He knew better than to engage with Brad.
"Yeah, a big loser," Jake echoed, his voice dripping with malice. "Can't even pass a simple math test."
"Such a disappointment," Steve added. "Your dad must be so proud of his little failure."
Mike, the smallest but meanest of the group, chuckled. "Maybe your dad should spend more time teaching you and less time running Turner Pharmaceuticals."
Oliver stood up, his face red with anger. "Leave him alone, Brad. You're just a bunch of bullies with nothing better to do."
Brad laughed, a cruel sound. "And what are you going to do about it, Oliver? You're just his little helper, doing his homework for a few bucks."
"At least I don't make my money by making others miserable," Oliver shot back.
The tension in the air was palpable. Students around them watched, some with pity, others with amusement. Brad's eyes narrowed as he stared at Oliver. "You want to play the hero, Oliver? Fine. But remember, heroes don't last long in this school."
With that, Brad and his gang sauntered off, leaving a trail of laughter behind them. James slumped in his seat, feeling defeated and humiliated. Oliver placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Don't let them get to you, James. They're just jealous because they know they'll never be as successful as you or your dad."
James nodded, but the words felt hollow. The weight of his family's expectations and the pressure of school were becoming unbearable. He wanted to escape, to find solace in his video games, the only place where he felt in control.
Later that day, as James and Oliver walked home, James broke the silence. "Thanks for standing up for me, Oliver. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Oliver smiled. "That's what friends are for, James. We'll get through this together."
James felt a flicker of hope. Despite the darkness at home and the bullying at school, he knew he had one person he could rely on. And sometimes, that made all the difference in the world.
